Do you need disk two of Descent FreeSpace: The Great War to play it on multiplayer?

I doubt you need the second disc to play the multiplayer.

If you still have your copy of Freespace 2, there's a mod out, using the Freespace sourcecode, to port the entirety of Freespace 1 into the new engine, which has since been enhanced with modern 3D graphics and effects. Look into it if you do have FS2 - it's plays like a dream, just like you remember only better looking.
Edit: Freespace went open source, which means the Freespace content is distributed for free and can be played as long as you own a copy of Freespace 2.
