Note that the following is taken word for word from the Strategy Guide.

The story went through many drastic changes over different drafts and scope reduction. Here are some of the biggest changes:

- The Syndicate used to be made up of five actors.

- Oleg wasn't cloned, he was a leg breaker for the Syndicate, who joined the Saints to be with his role model: Josh Birk.

- Gat didn't die, he was captured and you saved him.

- Shaundi had a subplot that explored survivor's guilt and depression.

- Shaundi never appeared in the game at all, instead she was off filming her reality show in Mexico. At the end of the game you wer to see her unwittingly on a date with Killbane without his mask on.

- Viola and Kiki both join the Saints.

- The calamity that caused STAG to roll into town changed multiple times. Originally Killbane set off a dirty bomb that totally cratered Stilwater. - Then it was changed to the Syndicate destroyed Stilwater in the middle of a convention called Saints Con, killing thousands of innocent people as well as Tobias and Laura from Saints Row and Saints Row 2. Next, it was changed to blowing up of the Saints church during Gat's funeral. Finally it ended up as the destruction of the bridge.

- There was a bonus cutscene planned, after the bridge is destroyed, where the Saints are singing a "We Are The Wrold" type song to raise money for Stilwater.

- In one story draft, if you chose to save Shaundi and Viola at the end of the game there was a coda after the closing credits where Shaundi is at Gat's grave. She is upset that the Saints let Killbane get away and have gone back to being celebrities again. She is then recruited by Cyrus and joins STAG.

- Likewise, if you chose the other optoin to kill Killbane, there was a coda after the closing credits where an enigmatic figure was flying into Steelport on a Syndicate jet and the person accompanying him was Johnny Gat.

Personally I'm bummed the post credit codas didn't make it in the game.

Well..... that explains why the Story feels so uncomplete....

I dont like either of the 2 last things, the post credits. If Gat really was part of STAG i would have loved to kill "that traitor" even though it would have probably resolved as amnesia or something like that and Shaundi joining STAG would make sense since no one seemed to care about Johnny's death which is my Personal let down. But it's still kinda out of character for her to join STAG just for that.....

these would make more sense than the Game's official story, since Oleg and this whole Clone thing felt too unrealistic. Gat being saved is more preferable than having him die, i would have loved to see Shaundi's storyline since that felt really cut from the Game, i mean you just jump over from her beeing Kidnapped to suprise beeing Kidnapped again and Viola/kiki takes her place.

All in all the Story was ok but the Choices where not real Choices and the Ending both sucked.....

Would love seeing more sub-plots exploring survivor's guilt!

...That explains so much of the insconistencies in regards to the entire story...or rather, not scrap of paper left to give you a reason for doing what you're doing in steelport.

Hopefully some of this stuff gets included in future installments. Obviously I'd love to see Gat back, but that bit about Shaundi leaving because Killbane got away is good too. Makes me glad I went with the more serious ending.

I think they would've tied it to Gat not liking the the sell out style of the Saints and him wanting to return to his more gangster roots. Would've been an interesting direction to take his character, but at the same time removes all the fun from him.

The whole cloning thing was done to make things more "believable" in the sense that if they have something ridiculous like cloning in the game/story it gives them more freedom to be absurd or make the absurd more believable within the context of the game itself.

After beating the game and reading this stuff in guide I think the best/better thing to have done would've been to have Shaundi kill Mia and take her place realizing that all the bad things that have happened to her or in her life have been the result of gangs. By doing that it keeps her feelings of depression intact along with her becoming more tough after Gat's death. It seemed dumb or pointless to have her become tougher and bitchier only for her to kidnapped and rescued at the end.

All in all the Story was ok but the Choices where not real Choices and the Ending both sucked.....

Yeah I would've rather have had all the choice elements combined into a single narative that not only makes the story better, but the player rewards as well.

Saints Row's freedom should come in it's gameplay, not story. Story choices are things better left to games like Fable, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, etc.

I just knew that they had to have re-done the story multiple times. A lot of things just felt inconsistent and weird, like they were out of place or out of sequence. At the beginning of the game, Gat bemoans what the Saints have become, how they sold out and are barely even gangsters anymore. It seems they planned for Shaundi to have similar feelings what with Gat dying for no valid reason and no one besides her even really giving a damn. Perhaps in SR4 (or future DLC for this game), the Saints' identity and how they'll turn out will be explored further.

This is how I would have made the story:

- Boss & Shaundi escape the plane, and the reason Johnny was cut off is because the Morning Star goons actually shot Johnny in the leg, and they shot the communication device, thus cutting him off. You escape, and Loren holds Gat captive.

- You arrive in Steelport to find out you have no funds, and so you travel to friendly fire with Shaundi to get strapped. Then you make your way to the Steelport National Guard, and battle all of them for their weapons, and you win that war and ladiladiloo...

 - You later receive a call from Loren, and he tells you he has Gat and that you will never find him and he will be dead soon, thus prompting you, Shaundi, and Pierce to raid the Syn Tower looking for him. You invade the Tower, going up from level to level, and you meet Oleg along the way. All four of you discover Loren inside the elevator, and he actually goes upward to his office were the Johnny Gat is being held. You get up there to see someone using Gat as a hostage, you kill the hostage, and try to kill Loren but then he runs to the elevator and takes it down stairs. Shaundi calls a Helicopter, and gets Gat out of there, leaving yourself, Oleg, and Pierce to kill the remaining men. You hop on that big ball thingy once you kill the remaining goods and that's where you crush Loren to his death. If you choose to destroy the building, you unlock it as a crib that is recustomized Saints style.. If you don't, then you gain 20% permanent respect and a cash bonus.

- Yourself, Gat, Shaundi, Pierce, and Oleg are in Shaundi's ex's house, wondering what move to make next. You decide to take over the Syndicate penthouse. You go in there, you and the Saints invade it, take it over, blah blah, and now that's your new HQ. So yourself, Gat, Oleg, and Shaundi have another meeting in your new Saints-Personified Penthouse and decide that they will need more members who knows Steelport and hate the Syndicate, if they're going to take down the Syndicate. First, you go save Kenzie who is being held on a boat by the Deckers. Then you go save Zimos in the BDSM club run by the Morning Star. Finally, you go help Angel battle the Luchadores, who were attempting to kill him. You introduce the Saints to it's three newest members, Kenzie, ZImos, and Angel. You also see a cutscene of Killbane, establishing himself as the new leader of The Syndicate, as opposed to Loren's right hands, Viola and KiKi.

- You do many missions in order to weaken the Syndicate, making many decisions along the way that will effect your overall ending. You later see a cutscene of Monica Hughes on the news, talking about how the gang violence in Steelport is at an all time high, and has deployed STAG into the city, to occupy the streets from all gang activity. You also see a cutscene of Killbane arguing with the DeWynter sisters. KiKi and Viola tell him that they are done with him, and they walk off, leaving Matt Miller and Killbane to run the entire Syndicate alone. You get a call from Viola, and she gives you information about how the Syndicate were bringing in a boat of new girls, since many of them didn't escape the Saints raid on the penthouse. Viola also mentions that after he pursues the boat, she feels that they should have a meeting and come to an agreement. You seize the boat for yourself, and you have to make the option of wether you want to give the girls to Matt Miller, for top dollar a head, or give them to Zimos, who promises to cut you in on what the hoes make.

- You and Oleg meet the DeWynter sisters. They tell you about how Killbane has gone mad and that they were done with him, and they want to see him suffer, and they think that joining the Saints to take down the Syndicate is the best way possible. STAG then comes after you all, then you end up in a gunfight with KiKi, Viola, and Oleg as allies, and you all escape together. After a few more missions, STAG manages to kidnap Viola and Pierce, so you disguise yourself as Cyrus, and take Johnny Gat as your "prisoner". Your cover is blown, and you have to bust out your friends, and eventually escape. You play more missions leading you up to the ending.

- Your at the ending and you have two possible options: Save Shaundi, Burt Reynolds, and the DeWynter Sisters, or go after Killbane and Matt Miller who are trying to flee the city.

- You choose to kill Killbane and Matt: Your successful, but you have lost a bunch of allies. an enraged Pierce cannot believe that you left Shaundi to die, and was later approached by Cyrus and Kia, and accepts their offer to join STAG. STAG tried to destroy all the builsings, hgoping they would find and kill you, but you go on their main Helicarrier ship or w/e you want to call it, and you kill everybody on there and the ship explodes while you escape. Your left with Gat, and a new generation of Lieutenants: Oleg, Zimos, Kenzie, and Angel, and after sending s broadcasted city wide message that the Saints are in charge, you burst into the city ready to take over.

- You chose to save Shaundi: You successfully save her, Reynolds, and the DeWynter twins. Angel was pissed that you let Killbane escape, but he got over it. Same as the other ending, STAG shoots up the buildings blah blah blah. After that, you see a cutscene of yourself in a now Saints-Personified meeting room that once belonged to the Syndicate. Yourself, Oleg, a more beautifully dressed Kenzie, Angel who is now in a suit and tie, Pierce, Gat, Zimos, the DeWynter twins, and Shaundi are all in the meeting room, when the Boss said "now, let's get down to business" as the scene fades to black and the credits popped up.

SEE, I thought of all that in my head as i typped it, and it would have been much better than the actual storyline.

Yeah, I would've been alot happier if they game had your storyline!(seriously though, you should definitely at least try writing a fanfic, i'd read it!)  Though I would've included a third ending which would've gone like this: You save your allies like normal and then after the credits once you get 95% game completion, a secret room opens up in the Syndicate/Saints building, inside it you find documents which tell of a top-secret base for the Syndicate on a remote island.

The Saints manage to convince STAG to team up with them to assault the island, you shoot your way through the base and you're shocked to encounter clones of EVERY single major and minor character in the entire series that was killed off, you then find the main cloning chamber and see the corpses of the deceased characters hooked up to machines, including Gat, then Killbane shows up with several clones of himself, and you fight them(he takes some super-steroids to make himself stronger, bragging that he made them from the Saints own energy drink, Shaundi has a funny line asking about who's bright idea it was for the Saints to manufacture an energy drink that actually makes stronger, to which Pierce responds, "uh well, it seemed like a good idea at the time")

You manage to bring Killbane to his knees, and are about to execute him when Matt shows up and tells you to back off, until he looks around and sees all the corpses hooked up to machines, he's shocked and disgusted that Killbane is cloning the deceased, claiming that it's sick and immoral to disrespect the dead like that, Killbane tells him to stop being such a whiny little bitch, which pisses Matt off so much that he decides that he's finally had enough of Killbane and the Syndicate, he kicks Killbane in the crotch and taunts  "who's the bitch now?" and joins the Saints.

You're once again about to pull the trigger on Killbane, until you hear a moaning sound, and you then notice the corpses in the room moving around and they start chanting Killbane's name and manage to escape from their binds(the cloning liquid or whatever has turned them all into zombies), the zombies start moving towards Killbane, you then shoot him in the crotch and run out of the room, leaving the zombies to devour Killbane.

You then fight your way through the rest of the Syndicate's mooks and clones to the top of the base, you then hear a noise behind you and turn around to shoot, only to see Gat alive and well(Pierce still thinks he's a zombie at first and tries to talk Gat into proving that he's not one, Gat responds by punching him in the chest and saying "that enough proof for ya?" and Pierce just groans in pain and nods) You then find an office at the top and hear a famailiar saying "I had a feeling we'd meet again" then a chair spins around to reveal none other then Dex!

You're about to kill Dex, but then you hear a gun click and see Masako assassins pointing guns at everyone in a big Mexican stand-off, Dex then explains that he was the one who created the Syndicate-after the Saints crippled his money resources and forced him to flee the country, he ran into Loren(who was the leader of a drug ring at the time) told him all about the Saints and convinced him to team up with him and any other low-life criminals they could find by promising them power and more money then they could possibly imagine, so they recruited Killbane, Matt and the DeWynter sisters and formed the syndicate, setting up stealth operations and not making a move against the Saints until they targeted their bank.

Dex admits he underestimated the Saints, congradulating them on getting so far and getting rid of Killbane(whom he admits to getting sick of) but then tells them that all good things must come to an end and orders the Masako to kill everyone, then you hear the sound of a helicopter approaching and you hear a voice over a loudspeaker telling Dex that he's under arrest, the camera pans to to the helicopter, and the voice is evealed to be form none other then Troy!

The Saints use the diversion to thier advantage, killing all the Masako, Dex then pushes a button to initiate the bases self-destruct sequence, shoots at the helicopter with a machine gun, forcing it to back off
and then base-jumps off the base(heh heh),you and your allies all thne jump off the roof after him just before the base blows up. You chase Dex until he runs into a hangar and escapes in a stealth plane which turns invisible and flies off.

Troy then shows up and you have a brief reunion with him, Troy admits that he misses being in the Saints and is considering resigning as Police Cheif and joining, you say you'll consider it after you find Dex.  You then notice a fighter jet nearby and decide to chase after Dex with it, Matt mentions that he can hack into the onboard computer of Dex's plane and track his location and disable his invisibility temporarily.  You chase Dex over the city of Stillwater and he taps into your radio frequency and brags about how his plane has enough firepower to level both Stillwater and Steelport and declares that if he can't have either city then no one can, he's about to launch the plane's arsenal, but Kenzie and Matt manage to hack the onboard computer and temporarily disable his weapons, you then get a limited window in which you have to shoot down Dex before he launches his arsenal.

You manage bring down Dex, but he quickly ejects from the plane and parachutes down into old Stillwater, while the plane crashes into a Saints billboard, Dex's parachute gets tangled up in a tree and we then hear the sound of creaking metal, Dex looks up only to see the giant Saints billboard falling down, he tries in vina to get free but he ends up getting crushed to death.

In the epilogue, we see the Saints having a meeting in the re-christened Syndicate building office, everyone you know is there, including Troy(now once again an official Saint), Benjamin King, Eric Gryphon(who is the management off business affairs and admits to being Alderman Hughes, like the boss, he had to get plastic surgery after being in the explosion and got a new identity and job), Matt(also a Saint, in charge of the Saints website along with Kenzie, who he's apparently dating now), Tera Patrick(in charge of the Saints new scientific research department), Jane Valderama(official Rep for the Saints), Reynolds, etc.  You then talk about you own both cities now and start discussing movie deals and whatnot, and Tera mentions that there's been a breakthrough in research that could potentially turn the zombies all back to normal(the boss mentions he/she hopes they didn't test it on Mr. Sunshine, because there's no way in hell they're fighting him again), then it cuts to a shot of the research facility with zombie Lin, zombie Carlos, zombie Aisha and a zombie of Julius hooked up to machines, they get injected with some kind of serum and we their faces slowly turn back to normal and they suddenly speak saying "what the hell"

Then it cuts to the end credits, and we see a montage over the end credits of the Saints holding a massive convention, showing off their new movie and comic book, all the Saints are signing autographs, and we then see Lin opening up a new car dealership for the Saints, Tera using her serum to revive the dead at Mouring Wood cemetery, Carlos becoming a succesful MMA fighter, Angel opening up a brand new gim, Oleg competing in the Olympics and winning every single gold medal, Aisha once again becoming a huge pop sensation and doing a duet with Zimos, Gat taking over the Professor Genki show and forcing prison convicts to battle each other to the death. The DeWynter sisters opening up a line of Saints BDSM clubs, Reynolds going into real estate, Viola becoming a famous porn star, Benjamin King and Julius writing a best-selling autobiography about them and the Saints, and finally Shaundi dating Pierce on her show.  After the credits, there's one additional scene of the boss getting drunk off his/her ass, then Shaundi and Pierce barge in the room whilst making out, the boss snaps them out of their trance, Shaundi apologizes and says she didn't notice the boss there, to which you respond, "don't stop on my account, I wouldn't mind seeing you two go at it"  Shaundi then says, "better yet, why don't you join us?" to which you respond "thought you'd never ask" You then kiss Shaundi and motion for her and Pierce to head to the bedroom, you then follow then in and lock the door. Then you hear some moaning and the screen cuts to black.
